The Israeli air force struck the Sayeda Zeinab area in the Syrian capital Damascus, according to Syrian state media SANA.

Earlier, heavy explosions were reported in the area with Syrian media reporting that an Israeli airstrike was taking place in the Sayyidah Zaynab area on the outskirts of Damascus with the first reports on social media suggesting strikes on Revolutionary Guard facilities.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

An important Shiite shrine is located in Sayeda Zeinab, and it is defended by pro-Iranian fighters, mainly members of the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which has been fighting in Syria on the side of the regime since 2013.

“According to initial information, an Israeli attack targeted the Sayeda Zeinab neighborhood,” SANA reported.

The Syrian Defense Ministry announced that Israeli airstrikes hit civilian targets south of the capital, causing material damage.

“I heard three successive explosions, one very strong,” resident Mehdi Mahfouz told AFP.

He added that he later saw “a plume of black smoke rising from a rural area”.

The explosions were heard in nearby neighborhoods and ambulances rushed to the scene.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the attack targeted “a house in a farm in the Sayeda Zeinab sector used by members of the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.”
