Consider carrying out a constitutional review to ensure Erdogan can run again, Bakhceli argued
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s main political ally said today that the constitution should be revised to allow the president to run again in elections scheduled for 2028.
After his re-election last year, Erdogan is serving his final term as president, according to the constitution, unless parliament calls early elections. He has ruled Turkey for more than 21 years, first as prime minister and then as president.
“Wouldn’t it be a natural and right choice to re-elect our president if terrorism is eradicated and inflation is dealt a heavy blow and Turkey secures political and economic stability?” said Devlet Bakhceli, head of the Nationalist Movement Party. (MHP), which is an ally of Erdogan’s ruling AKP party.
A constitutional review should be considered to ensure Erdogan can again run for president, Bakhceli argued in a speech to MHP lawmakers in parliament.
Nationalist Bakhceli last month caused a stir in Turkey’s political affairs by proposing that the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) be allowed to address parliament if he announces an end to his organization’s insurgency.
Some analysts say the motivation for the shock proposal may be the desire of the AKP and MHP parties to win the support of the pro-Kurdish DEM party, the third largest in parliament, for a constitutional overhaul that could give impetus to on Erdogan’s prospects in the 2028 elections.
A constitutional revision can be put to a referendum if it is supported by 360 MPs in the 600-member parliament. Holding early elections also needs the support of 360 MPs.
The AKP and its allies have 321 seats, while the DEM has 57.
