The transfer of migrants to the two closed mandatory residence centers established in northern Albania by Italy has begun again
The Italian Navy ship Libra, which since Monday was south of Lampedusa picking up migrants deemed to be from safe countries), has started its journey to northern Albania, where the two closed centers of Sengin and Giander are located.
In the two specific centers, there are no asylum seekers at this stage, after the Rome court refused to validate the mandatory stay of 12 people, coming from Egypt and Bangladesh, almost two weeks ago.
According to La Repubblica newspaper, the Libra is carrying only eight migrants who, after their arrival, are expected to apply for political asylum from Italy.
A ninth, an elderly man from Bangladesh, due to the problematic state of his health, was finally transferred to a closed center for migrants, which is located in Italy.
Initially, as it had been leaked, the intention of the Italian Ministry of the Interior was to board the Libra a much higher number of migrants, from sixty to seventy.
But the “fast-track” process of asylum claims automatically excludes the vast majority of people trying to reach the shores of Lower Italy by boat.
It will now be seen if the Italian judiciary will approve the stay in the closed centers of Sengin and Giander, the eight migrants who are on the Italian Navy ship.
