President-elect Donald Trump announced today that he has selected Chris Wright, an oil and gas CEO and staunch defender of the use of fossil fuels, to serve as Energy Secretary.

Wright is the founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, a Denver-based oilfield services company. He is expected to support Trump’s plan to maximize oil and gas production and seek ways to boost electricity generation, for which demand is rising for the first time in decades.

He is also likely to share Trump’s opposition to global cooperation to combat climate change.

Wright has called climate change activists risk-takers and likened Democrats’ efforts to fight global warming to Soviet-style communism.

“There is no climate crisis, nor are we in the middle of an energy transition,” Wright said in a video posted on his LinkedIn profile last year.

He himself has no political experience, he has written extensively about the need for more fossil fuel production to lift people out of poverty.
