Starmer said strong ties with China were important to the wider international community and after the two spoke he proposed a full bilateral meeting in the near future.
London, Thanasis Gavos
The UK must have a “consistent, resilient and respectful relationship” with China, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Mr. Starmer said strong ties with China were important to the wider international community and after the two spoke he proposed a full bilateral meeting in the near future.
He added that he hopes for a visit by Finance Minister Rachel Reeves to Beijing to rewarm bilateral economic relations
Mr Starmer became the first UK leader to meet the Chinese president in nearly seven years since Theresa May.
The British Labor government’s approach worries staunch critics of Chinese influence in the opposition Conservatives.
Political commentators also point out that Starmer’s attempt to bring Britain closer to China will be negatively received by the next US president Trump and his staff.
President Xi, for his part, commented that a new “strategic cooperation” between the two countries would allow partnerships in new fields.
