Russia has moved more than 70 animals, including an African lion and two brown bears, to a zoo in the North Korean capital Pyongyang from a Moscow zoo, the Russian government said today.

The animals were “gifts from Vladimir Putin to the Korean people,” the government said.

Alexander Kozlov, the Russian minister of natural resources, oversaw the relocation of the animals, which were flown to the Pyongyang Central Zoo accompanied by veterinarians from the Moscow zoo.

Photos released by the Russian government show a white cockatoo traveling in a cage and Kozlov being shown around the Korean zoo by local officials.

Russia donated birds such as eagles, storks, parrots to the Pyongyang Central Zoo in April.

Pyongyang and Moscow have developed closer ties since Putin visited the country in June and struck a deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. On that trip, Kim gave Putin a pair of Pungshan dogs, a local breed.
