Turkish “bridge” to Armenia – Tsavousoglu-Mizorian meeting to restore relations

by

The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Tsavousoglu and Armenian counterpart of Ararat Mirzoyan met today for talks in the south Turkey and the first stated that their meeting was very productive and constructive.

Tsavousoglou made statements next to Mirzoyan after the two met for half an hour in diplomatic forum in Antalya. Turkey has not had diplomatic or trade relations with Armenia since the 1990s, but held talks in January in a first attempt to restore relations following a 2009 peace deal that was never ratified.

The two countries are located on knives on several issues, most notably the 1.5 million Armenians that Armenia says were killed in 1915 by the Ottoman Empire, from which modern-day Turkey emerged.

THE Armenia argues that the 1915 murders are genocide. Turkey acknowledges that many Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during World War I, but denies the numbers and denies the killings were systematic and genocidal.

The two countries have said the January talks were “positive and constructive”, creating the prospect of a possible resumption of relations and the opening of borders.

The tensions flared up again the 2020 during the war for the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. Turkey has accused Armenian forces of possessing land belonging to Azerbaijan. Turkey has since called for an approach, as it seeks to increase its regional influence.
