Parliament: Greece-UAE Agreement on Cooperation in Foreign Policy and Defense Submitted for ratification

Filed to be ratified in Parliamentthe agreement between government of the Hellenic Republic and government of United Arab Emirates on Joint Cooperation in Foreign Policy and Defense.

With the provisions of the relevant bill of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are ratified and have the force defined by article 28 par. 1 of the Constitution: a) the above Agreement, signed in Abu Dhabi on November 18, 2020 and b) the Verbal Communications exchanged between of the Greek Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, signed on 16th and 28th November 2021, respectively.

THE ratified Agreement aims at the cooperation of the Parties in the defense and maintenance of the security, sovereignty, unity, protection and independence of the territory of their countries.

Among other things, in the agreement:

1.They are provided the mutual contribution to the defense and maintenance of the security, sovereignty, unity, protection and independence of the territory of each state, the communication between the parties in case of threat against the above, in order to take action and the measures that will be considered necessary by the Parties, and the establishment of measures and mechanisms for the implementation of the ratified Agreement.

2.They are adjustable consultation issues between the parties. In particular, regular consultations and consultations between the Foreign Ministers are envisaged, as well as the exchange of analyzes between the parties in the event of a threat to peace that may affect their national interests.

3.They are adjustable issues of actions of one party in the territory of the other party. In particular, it is stipulated that the actions provided for in the ratified Agreement, as well as the use of facilities, facilities and workplaces by the armed forces and personnel of one Party shall be subject to the prior approval of the Host Party. In addition, the forces and personnel of one Party may be stationed in the territory of the Host Party in accordance with relevant agreements, memoranda of understanding, arrangements, letters or protocols to be concluded at a later date. Finally, it is possible to conclude separate agreements, memoranda of understanding, cooperation protocols, arrangements, letters for the placement of equipment, supplies and the use of facilities and workplaces by the parties.
