Tank fire hit Markaba, Ouazani and Kfarsumba, which are within two kilometers of the Blue Line
Israel’s “warning shots” for any violation of the ceasefire in Lebanon. Israeli tanks opened fire on three towns in southeastern Lebanon on the border with Israel on Thursday, Lebanese security sources and state media said, 24 hours after a ceasefire banning “offensive military operations” took effect.
Tank fire hit Markaba, Ouazani and Kfarsuba, which are within two kilometers of the Blue Line demarcating the border between Lebanon and Israel. One of the security sources said two people were injured in Markaba.
The IDF in a statement declares that they will not accept a violation of the agreement.
The announcement of the IDF
“In the last hour, several suspects were spotted arriving in vehicles in various areas in southern Lebanon, violating the terms of the ceasefire. The IDF opened fire on them.
“The IDF remains in southern Lebanon and will actively enforce violations of the ceasefire agreement.”
A ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah came into effect on Wednesday under a deal brokered by the US and France to allow displaced people in both countries to begin returning to their homes in border areas that have disbanded after 14 months of hostilities.
But managing returns is complicated. Israeli troops are still stationed on Lebanese soil in towns along the border, and this morning the Israeli army called on residents of border-strip towns not to return yet for their own safety.
The three cities affected today are in this lane.
The deal ended the deadliest standoff between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group in years. But Israel is still fighting the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israeli forces have up to 60 days to withdraw from southern Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had instructed the army not to allow residents to return to villages near the border.
