US President Joe Biden said today he hopes President-elect Donald Trump will reconsider his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada, saying it could “damage” relations with close allies.

“I hope he reconsiders. I think it’s counterproductive for him to do that,” he told reporters in Nantucket.

“We have an unusual situation in the Americas, we are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and two allies: Mexico and Canada. The last thing we need to do is start destroying those relationships.”

On Monday, Trump said he would impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico until they crack down on drug trafficking and migrants crossing the border, a move that could violate the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said today that she did not specifically discuss tariffs in a phone call with Trump yesterday, adding that the two agreed there would be good relations between the two countries.

After the phone call, Trump said Sheinbaum “agreed to stop immigration through Mexico and into the US, essentially closing our Southern Border.”

However, Mexico’s president said she presented a strategy that “focuses” on migrants before they reach the US border.
