According to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Slovakia plans to hold negotiations next week on the future of natural gas supplies, as well as the transit of the fuel through Ukraine.

“We are conducting extremely intensive international negotiations on natural gas supplies for 2025”Fitso said during a press conference after a cabinet meeting on Friday, according to Bloomberg. “These decisions have huge pitfalls because there are political statements from the Ukrainian side and there is pressure for any disruption of supplies from the East to the West.”

Slovakia is a major buyer of Russian natural gas flowing through Ukraine. With the Kremlin’s war going on for nearly three years, Ukraine has made it clear it will not extend its gas transit deal, which expires at the end of this year. Slovakia has resumed talks to keep the gas flowing since Jan. 1, with the proposal including a swap deal between Azerbaijan and Russia.

Slovakia will reject pressure to receive natural gas only from the West. “We see no reason to pay more for natural gas than is necessary for geopolitical reasons”Fitzo stated. “Therefore, in the coming days, including the Christmas break, you may witness extremely intensive negotiations at various levels and in various countries, starting as early as next week.”
