An explosion in Moscow’s Rizhansky Prospect district occurred in the early hours of the morning, killing the head of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection (NBC) unit, Igor Kirillov, and his assistant. The murder was confirmed by the Russian Investigative Committee.

An improvised explosive device had been planted on a skate, which was detonated as soon as Kirillov got out of his limousine, according to initial reports.

Kirillov was born on July 13, 1970, in the city of Kostroma. It promoted the Russian narrative about “network of biological weapons manufacturing laboratories in Ukraine operating on behalf of and with the support of the US Pentagon”, reports that Washington categorically denied.

He enlisted in the Armed Forces of the USSR in 1987. In 1991 he graduated from the Kostroma Higher Military School of Chemical Defense Command. From 1991 to 1994 he served as a platoon commander in the Western Force Group. Since 1995 he has successively held positions from company commander to brigade commander of radiation, chemical and biological protection.

From 2005 to 2007 he studied at the Military Protection Academy of the nuclear, biological and chemical protection unit.

Since 2009, he has served in various positions in the Office of the Chief of the Russian Armed Forces of the Russian Armed Forces.

In September 2014, Kirillov was appointed head of the Military Protection Academy of the Russian Federation. Since April 2017, he has been the head of the Russian Federation Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

For direct participation in military actions against a sovereign state (Ukraine), Kirillov was added to the list of international sanctions. On February 23, 2022, it was added to Canada’s sanctions list. On October 19, 2022, it was added to Ukraine’s sanctions list. He was also sanctioned by the United Kingdom on October 8.
