Assange Case: Appeal Rejected by British Supreme Court

by

The Supreme Court of Britain has rejected the request of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to appeal his extradition decision to the United States, which wants to try him for a massive leak of documents, the court announced.

The file will now be returned to Interior Minister Priti Patel, Wikileaks reported on Twitter. According to a spokeswoman for the Supreme Court, she denied the allegations, arguing that she did not raise “any reasonable legal issues”.

The 50-year-old Australian has been prosecuted by the United States for publishing more than 700,000 classified documents related to military and diplomatic activities since 2010, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He faces up to 175 years in prison in a case allegedly an attack on his freedom of the press by his supporters.

In January 2021, British justice had initially ruled in favor of the founder of Wikileaks. Citing the risk of Julian Assange committing suicide, Judge Vanessa Baraitzer had refused to give the green light for his extradition.

But Washington claimed a landslide victory in December when the Supreme Court overturned the ruling, saying the United States had provided guarantees that would meet the court’s concerns.

Julian Assange was then allowed to appeal his decision
