“There are no Chinese soldiers in the Canal, for God’s sake, people are free to visit the Canal,” the Panamanian president said in a speech.
US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera to be ambassador to Panama after threatening to take back control of the Canal, which Washington handed over to local authorities 25 years ago.
Trump called Cabrera a “staunch champion of America First values,” adding, “Few people understand Latin American politics as well as Kevin. He will do a fantastic job representing our nation’s interests in Panama.”
On Sunday, Trump threatened to take back control of the Panama Canal, claiming that the country, with which the US has had diplomatic relations since 1903, was “squatting us in the Canal.” He also claimed that Chinese soldiers have taken over the operation of the Canal and “always make sure that the US pays billions of dollars in repairs but has no say in anything.”
Panamanian President Jose Raul Molino responded that China has no influence on the management of the Canal and today added that there are no Chinese soldiers there.
“There are no Chinese soldiers in the Canal, for God’s sake, people are free to visit the Canal,” he said in a speech.
China does not control the Canal but a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings manages two ports at its entrances, in the Caribbean and the Pacific.
