The bridge collapse in northern Brazil last Sunday claimed the lives of at least ten people, while seven others are still missing, according to the latest tally released by the Brazilian naval yesterday friday

Much of the bridge Josselinou Kubisek ji Oliveirawhich connected the states Maraniau (northeast) and Tocadins (north), collapsed, without the causes being explained by the authorities yet.

The navy found one more body in the river Tocadinsand another six kilometers from the site of the disaster, according to his statement.

Consequently, “ten deaths have been confirmed” while “seven people are missing”, at least “so far”, the same source clarified.

The most recent official count, which was made public yesterday Thursday, spoke of eight dead and nine missing.

Rescue operations remain ongoing, involving 70 rescuers, while a special hyperbaric chamber is also being used to explore areas as deep as 30 meters, according to the navy.

Three heavy trucks carrying “22,000 liters of insecticides and 76 tons of sulfuric acid, a corrosive chemical” ended up in the river when the bridge collapsed, according to Brazil’s national water resources management agency.

A representative of the fire department, however, assured that the tanks of the trucks seem to be “intact” and an official of the state secretariat (s.s. ministry) of the Environment of Maraniau emphasized to the Globo television network that the risk of contamination is “low”, expressing relief that the “worst case scenario” — the contamination of the river with sulfuric acid.

The approximately 500 meter long bridge was built in the 1960s.
