The revelation that Asma Assad, the wife of the deposed president of Syria, is hospitalized with leukemia in a Moscow hospital in a critical condition is made by the British Telegraph. The glamorous former First Lady of Syria is in critical condition – “severely ill” as reported – and is being treated in isolation.

The doctors treating her – including her father, cardiologist Fawaz Akhras – give her a “50/50” chance of survival.

“Asma is dying,” a source with direct contact with a family representative for Assad’s 49-year-old wife told the Telegraph.

Asma Assad previously beat breast cancer but last May the Syrian government announced that she had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, which had also been in remission until it recently resurfaced, the British newspaper reported.

A few days ago the news broke that she asked for a divorce from Bashar al-Assad in order to move to her home country and be treated in London.

The Kremlin, however, denied the rumours, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissing the claims.
