Mass mobilizations announces the Verdi trade union for Monday at 11 largest German airports. Thousands of flight cancellations are expected
Bad news for those who have arranged a plane trip to Germany (or return from Germany) for next Monday: Verdi, the largest public and tertiary sector in Germany, has announced strikes at all major airports in the country.
The mobilizations include the airports of Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Anover, Hamburg, Bremen, Leipzig and Common Cologne and Bonn Airport.
Berlin Airport announced that it will close on Monday, with no one of the 246 scheduled departures and arrivals. The rest of the airports will try to serve as many people as possible. According to preliminary estimates, however, about 3,400 flight cancellations are expected, which will affect about 510,000 passengers. Many airports are also scheduled for protests. All this in view of the new, third in a row of payroll in the public sector, which begins in a few days.
There had been a warning strikes at four airports in recent weeks. In the last 48 -hour strike, which took place at Munich Airport on February 27 and 28, 80% of the flights had been canceled. Something similar will probably happen on Monday, a spokesman for the airport in the Merkur newspaper.
‘A scenario of horror’
Verdi requires increases of 8% (or at least 350 euros per month), additional surcharges for specific aggravating activities as well as three additional guaranteed removable time. “We are forced to mobilize, as the other side has not even submitted a specific proposal for negotiations,” says Verdi Vice President Christine Belle.
The reaction of the German Airport Union (ADV) was intense. “A whole country is cut off from air transport,” says Adv Chief Ralph Bazel at the German News Agency (DPA). He speaks of “a new dimension in strikes”, but also “a scenario of horror for passengers, with wider impact on mobility and economic activity”.
But no more mobilizations are excluded in the coming days. The Cologne Public Transport Organization (KVB) is already announcing a strike for next Wednesday, March 12, for the third time in two months!
