President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Monday (21) that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, should visit Brazil in May.
“I would like to thank the Saudi Arabian ambassador for the presence, just now I was talking with Crown Prince Bin Salman, who is due to visit us on the 9th of May,” Bolsonaro said, at a ceremony at the Planalto Palace on biomethane incentives.
“A great partnership in many aspects is the world’s interest in Brazil and Brazil is interested in the world as well.”
The meeting between the two leaders was originally scheduled to take place on the 14th, but was postponed. This is an attempt by the Brazilian government to emphasize the economic agenda with the Middle East country.
The leader of Saudi Arabia, also called MBS, is known for his repressive agenda and is accused of being responsible for authorizing the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of his regime.
The Washington Post columnist and MBS critic was last seen at the consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018, where he reportedly received a lethal injection before having his body dismembered and the remains – never found – removed from the scene. in garbage bags.
The prince is one of the leaders of authoritarian governments who have often been praised by Bolsonaro and allies since the beginning of his term. In 2019, the president met with MBS in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and said he had “a certain affinity” with the prince, whom he claimed to be “almost brother”.
At the time, Bolsonaro was on a trip with the aim of exposing Brazil to Saudi investors gathered at the conference known as Davos no Deserto.
Bolsonaro was in Russia in February and met with President Vladimir Putin. Afterwards, he met with Viktor Orbán, the prime minister of Hungary, on an impromptu trip to the country, where he repeated the gesture made with the Saudi.
