Temporary suspension was on Thursday by Bulgaria’s European Prosecutor Supervisory, Teodora Georgieva, by decision of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, as an investigation is being carried out on a possible breach of duty.

The decision of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) announced on Thursday is the first to suspend duties and internal investigation into complaints about inappropriate behavior by a prosecutor in Eppo’s four years of operation.

The mission of Eppo is to investigate serious fraud cases in the European Union, and therefore the independence of the Authority is vital to its function and reputation.

The decision was made amid extensive concerns about the efforts of Bulgarian officials to prevent high profile Eppo investigations, as Politico reports.

“As the highest measure that is available against any risk or suspicion of investigations of investigations, the Bulgarian European Prosecutor’s Office has been temporarily suspended,” Eppo said in a statement.

European Archbishop Laura Kovesi stressed that her office launched administrative investigation into possible inappropriate behavior on the part of Georgieva a few days after Bulgarian media have spoken of obvious links between the prosecutor and a alleged criminal. Called to comment on the issue, Eppo refused.

Georgieva claims to have been under pressure in a campaign associated with a high profile research to expand the Bulgarian state gas storage unit, Chiren.

The Bulgarian prosecutor has accused Delian Perefski, a member of the Bulgarian Parliament, of threatening to prevent her from prosecuting a former energy minister involved in the Chiren project.

“They threaten me and do it successfully. I feel that I am threatened by Peevsky. First was the fire at the family’s home, where my mother died, “Georgieva told the Bulgarian television channel BTV.

Following her mother’s death in the fire, which is being investigated by arson, EPPO has in recent weeks provided additional protection to Georgieva additional protection.

Reacting to her statements on BTV, Pefski claimed that Georgieva was lying and called on Eppo to act.

The United States and the United Kingdom has imposed penalties on Petefski on “constant corruption in Bulgaria”.

The office of the Sofia prosecutor launched in 2023 investigation into corruption against Georgieva, who, according to local Capital media, did not showcase criminal behavior. The Bulgarian anti -corruption investigation against Georgieva is ongoing, however, in progress, according to Politico.
