Participation was massive in the second round of the election, as it reached 64.5%, increased significantly from 53% of the first round
Nicusor Dan, moderate and pro -European, emerges as a new president of Romania, in a critical juncture for the country and the wider region. His election sends a clear message in favor of the European course and institutional stability,
The central politician, who is expected to prevail in the second round of Romania’s presidential election with almost all of the votes counting, said Sunday that discussions about forming a new coalition government may take a few weeks.
Speaking on the private television network Digi24, Dan stressed that the new government wishes to include all the center -right and center -left parliamentary parties to ensure political stability and reform continuity.
With more than 99% of the vote, the liberal and pro -European mayor of Bucharest secures a victory in the second round of the Romanian presidential election, garnering 55%, compared to 44.94% of nationalist and Philidan candidate.
According to some official results, a total of 11.64 million voters participated in the election, of which 1.64 million voted from abroad and nearly 10 million in Romania.
About 790,000 votes from abroad are left, where Simon precedes, but there is no mathematical probability of covering the difference. Dan leads 907,000 votes, a difference that now locks his victory.
Earlier, exit polls showed a 55 -year -old mathematician victory over far -right candidate George Simon with 55% against 45%.
Participation was massive in the second round of the election, as it reached 64.5%, increased significantly from 53% of the first round.
In his first statements following the announcement of the exit polls, Nicusor Dan praised the “impressive endurance” of Romanian society, which – as he said – calls for profound changes.
“This victory shows that the Romanians have chosen the dialogue instead of hatred,” the independent liberal candidate said, adding that society has sent a loud message in favor of democracy, moderation and institutional reform.
Nicusor Dan’s victory, if confirmed by the official results, is expected to reassure concerns in Brussels and other European capitals for Romania, a country of 19 million residents, an important member of the EU and NATO to turn to the right.
The Romanian elections were also watched by Washington, where top Trump government officials had expressed their support for the possibility of a right -wing political shift in the country. US Vice President Jay Di Vance had openly criticized the Romanian authorities last February for the cancellation of the November 2024 initial election process.
The Romanian Supreme Court had decided to annul the first electoral process and order its repetition, following complaints that supranationalist Kalin Georgkeccu, who had preceded the first round, benefited from an illegal online campaign with possible support. Georgkescu himself, as well as the Russian government, have denied the charges. Despite the denials, Romania’s electoral authorities ruled him out of the re -match.
Nicusor Dan’s opponent, George Simon, won the first round of this year’s election, as he was openly aligned with Georgkescu and denounced the cancellation of elections as illegal intervention.
The immediate challenge of Dan as the president will be to secure an alliance of pro -European parties in parliament and to appoint a prime minister who will take on the implementation of harsh financial measures, with the aim of limiting the country’s fiscal deficit, which reaches 9%.
