Nuclear weapons use alert by Russia – Japan warning

by

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said today that the prospect of using Russia nuclear weapons is “increasingly true” and welcomed the US ambassador’s visit to Hiroshima, the first city to be attacked by nuclear weapons.

Japan, the only country that has been attacked with atomic weapons, has repeatedly expressed its opposition to nuclear weapons.

Kishida, who represents Hiroshima in parliament, visited the city’s monument and peace museum today with US Ambassador to the country Ram Emanuel.

“When the possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia becomes more and more real, I believe that Ambassador Emanuel’s visit to Hiroshima and his experience of seeing the nuclear reality will be a strong message to the international community. I think our visit was substantial.” , Kishida told the public television network NHK.

He said the Russian invasion of Ukraine showed the difficulties of creating a world without nuclear weapons.

Putin has not directly threatened a nuclear attack. But he warned during the Feb. 24 invasion that anyone blocking Russia would face “such repercussions that you will never see in your history” – a statement that some leaders have taken as a threat to use nuclear weapons.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said on Tuesday that Russia would use nuclear weapons only in the event of “an existential threat to our country.”

The leaders of the Group of Seven warned Russia on Thursday not to use biological, chemical or nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine.
