Former Paralympic South African Oscar Pistorius was seen fighting on a triathlon last weekend in the seaside town of Derban, 12 years after his girlfriend’s murder and a year after his release.
The Netwerk24 news website confirmed on Wednesday the participation of Pistorius in the Ironman 70.3 race. Netwerk24, citing anonymous source, said that Pistorius was allowed by his suspension manager to fight.
Conrad Dormehl, a lawyer for Pistorius, confirmed to Reuters that Pistorius was involved in the Derban match.
Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the South African prison department, said he did not know if Pistorius was allowed to fight, but would learn and answer questions sent by Reuters. He noted that his suspension officer would have to approve to travel from his place of residence to another area.
The Pistorius
Pistorius – called “Blade Runner” for his carbon fiber prosthetic feet – killed 29 -year -old model Riva Stenkamp through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013, in a crime that caught the world.
He had repeatedly stated that he had crossed Steenkamp for an invader and had multiple appeals against his conviction. Pistorius, who is 38 years old, was released in January 2024, having completed more than half of his sentence and is free to terms with his sentence in 2029.
The results published online by Sportsplits show that an athlete named Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius competed in the triathlon with race number 105, taking 555th among all participants and third in the “physical disabled” category.
The race included 2km swimming, 90km cycling and 21km running – a total distance of 70.3 kilometers.
Pistorius was once the favorite of the audience and a pioneer voice for athletes with disabilities, for whom he campaigned to allow them to compete with the artists in major sporting events.
He won six gold medals in three Paralympic Games in Athens, Beijing and London, and participated in matches with artisans at the London Olympics in 2012.
