Xenia Petrova, a Russian scientist at Harvard University, who was arrested last month on charges of federal smuggling, was released on Wednesday by the detention of the Migration and Customs Service after a hearing.
Petrova had been put under federal detention in May, when Massachusetts prosecutors accused her of smuggling embryo frogs in the United States, without the required statements to the customs authorities.
It was released on restrictive terms, under an agreement between an indictment and defense. The preliminary hearing is temporarily scheduled for June 18.
Petrova has been in custody since February, when her visa was recalled at Boston’s Logan International Airport. She was initially held at a Center for Migrants in Vermond and later transferred to Louisiana, where she filed for release, claiming that her detention was illegal and feared persecution in the event of a return to Russia due to her involvement in protests against the war in Ukraine.
Her case was transferred to a federal criminal level in May, with the official declaration of an illegal introduction of biological material in the United States.
At the time of her arrest, Xenia Petrova worked in a Harvard University Research Laboratory, where she had developed computational scenarios to analyze microscope images. According to her colleagues, her innovative applications could revolutionize cancer.
As the laboratory scientists at NBC News reported, Petrova had a unique combination of skills, necessary for the interpretation of specialized data. “He was the only one who could do it. It was only that, “said her mentor and lead researcher Leon Peskin.
Petrova described her experience as shocking, talking about isolation and complete disconnection from the outside world. “I was confused alone. They kept me in a cell without any contact – neither with my lawyer, nor with Leon, nor with anyone, “he said.
At the end of May, a federal judge in Vermont ordered her release from the detention of immigrants, citing concerns about the legal validity of her visa revocation and her ongoing detention.
However, Petrova continues to face a separate criminal prosecution in Massachusetts on the charge of the smuggling of fetal frog material.
