Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will meet with delegations of Ukrainian and Russian negotiators before the start of a new round of peace talks in Istanbul.
“We will have a brief meeting with the delegations in the morning,” Erdogan told a news conference after the cabinet meeting.
“Turkey is” perhaps the only country that is making sincere efforts to resolve the crisis between Ukraine and Russia through dialogue, “he said.
Erdogan also said that his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky were “progressing positively.”
He claimed that some circles had tried to involve Turkey in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. “No one can stop Turkey, which has a fair and honest stance, from becoming a bridge of peace, tranquility and trust in the region and around the world,” Erdogan said, without elaborating on another country. “We know that those who try to involve our country in the war, in this Russia-Ukraine crisis, see the bridge of peace that we have built with a tight heart.”
In a telephone conversation yesterday, Sunday, Erdogan and Putin had agreed to hold a new round of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul. Talks between the two countries’ delegations are expected to conclude on Wednesday, according to Russian chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky.
Since February 28, three rounds of meetings between Russian and Ukrainian diplomats and a series of online talks have taken place, but no substantial result has been achieved in ending the war.
