The EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) expressed its support for Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone from January 1, 2026, EU Economics and Productivity Commissioner Valdis Dobrovski Today at Ecofin’s press conference in Luxembourg.
“I welcome today’s Ecofin decision that supports Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone from January 1, 2026. This is indeed a milestone. Consequently, now, this will pass for discussions at the European Council and then return to Ecofin for a final decision at Ecofin in July”Dobrovskis said after the ministers meeting.
Polish Minister of Finance Andrei Domanskiwho chaired today’s meeting by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, clarified that the finance ministers adopted their decision unanimously.
Ecofin is made up of the Ministers of Economy and Finance of the 27 EU Member States, as well as the budget ministers responsible when discussing fiscal issues. The Council is responsible for the EU policy in the economy, taxation and regulation of financial services.
The Eurogroup approved on Thursday night a recommendation by the eurozone Member States to the EU Council that Bulgaria should introduce the euro on January 1, 2026.
The recommendation is expected to be approved by the Ecofin Council (by a special majority of the eurozone Member States) at its meeting on June 20th. The Council is expected to approve a letter to the European Council. The European Council will discuss the matter at its meeting on June 26-27.
The procedure will be completed on July 8 with the vote in the European Parliament on its opinion and the approval of the final decisions by the EU Council.
