Solar energy became the main source of electricity in Europe in June for the first time for a whole month, contributing 22.1%of production, over nuclear power stations (21.8%) and wind energy (15.8%), the British Ember Studies Center said Thursday.
Followed by gas (14.4%) and hydroelectric installations (12.8%), according to tables listed in its analysis.
According to the same source, for at least 13 days, a record for the production of energy from photovoltaic frameworks was broken, both because of their continued installation and due to continuous sunshine in Epirus.
Wind energy also broke a record, contributing 15.8% of production in June and 16.6% in May, although the beginning of the year was difficult due to the less favorable situation, the weaker winds.
Thus, carbon -burning power plants produced only a spectacular reduced percentage of the mixture in Europe (6.1%), according to Ember. The two countries that are most based on carbon, Germany and Poland, also saw their percentages decrease significantly last month, respectively to 12.4% and 42.9%.
However, as the overall demand for energy increases, fossil fuels, above all carbon and gas, do not recede: thanks to their burning, 23.6% of the current in Europe in June, from 22.9% in May 2024.
The first semester was used more gas compared to the corresponding period of 2024, mainly due to the lower availability of hydroelectric plants, Ember said.
