The first parking meters in the world, known as Park-O-Meter No.1, settled as today, July 16, 1935, at the corner of First Street and Robinson Avenue in Oklahoma, USA.
The parking lot was created by Carl Maggie And the idea started when he moved to Oklahoma to open his newspaper, Oklahoma News. It was then that he noticed that the city had one Common problem with many urban areas of Attica: the lack of parking spaces At a time when many had cars, which were crowded daily in the business area of the center.
Called to find a solution to the problem, Maggie invented the Park-o-meter. The first functional model was publicly presented in early May 1935, starting a strong discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of controlled paid parking.
Those who were opposed to parking meters thought that the payment for parking was anti -Americanas drivers were forced to pay, something that was equivalent to their cars.
In spite of the reactions, the first parkers were installed by the Dual Parking Meter Company him July 1935. The cost was a coin of five minutes per hour and were placed along the sidewalk in delimited seats.
Maggie’s invention quickly got a place: Retail traders loved the parking meters, as they encouraged the rapid alternation of cars, and customers and drivers were forced to accept them as a traffic solution.
Until the early 1940s, there were more than 140,000 parking meters in all US.
The parkers we have today have evolved a lot, they have been made electronically and their payment is by card:
