Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Wednesday that “the United States is (strongly) resolutely on the side of Israel in the face of the terrorist threat and all threats” against the Jewish state, according to the Leo newspaper.
The US president also expressed during a telephone conversation “his deepest condolences after the horrific terrorist attacks” that resulted in the deaths of 11 people in a week and offered US “help” to the head of the Israeli government.
The funerals of the victims of the three consecutive attacks begin today in Israel: near Tel Aviv on Tuesday night, in Khandera, in northern Israel, on Sunday, and in Berseva, a large city in the Negev desert (south) on March 22.
The attacks were carried out by a Palestinian from the occupied West Bank on Tuesday and by Israeli Arabs affiliated with the jihadist movement in Khandera and Berceva.
“Israel is facing a deadly wave of Arab terrorism,” said Naftali Bennett, urging Israelis in possession of weapons not to go out without them, citing “more than 200 interrogations and arrests.”
Israeli authorities are concerned that a “wave” of violence similar to last year could erupt, when incidents in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian part of the holy city that Israel has held since 1967, led to bloody incidents in Temenon Square and then the 11-day war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
This time, Israeli officials say they are worried they will see attacks inspired by or linked to the Islamic State (IS) jihadist organization.
