A convoy of Ukrainian buses started today with the destination Mariupol in southern Ukraine to try to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate trapped residents of the city, said Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk.
She said 45 buses were on their way to Mariupol after the International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed that Russia had agreed to open a safe corridor.
The city’s mayor said this week that up to 170,000 residents are trapped in Mariupol without electricity and with supplies running out.
“There are 45 buses on their way to Mariupol,” Verestsuk said in a statement.
The city, which before the war had a population of over 400,000, has been a central target of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began five weeks ago and has been under almost constant bombardment.
Repeated attempts to organize safe humanitarian corridors have failed and both sides are blaming each other. Russia denies targeting civilians.
Signs of withdrawal of Russian forces from Chernobyl – Chernihiv
Signs of withdrawal of Russian troops from Chernihiv and Chernobyl in northern Ukraine are reported by Western media and Washington. It is noted that Ukraine and Russia will continue their peace talks digitally on Friday, as a senior Ukrainian official said yesterday, after the end of the negotiations in Turkey.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces are regaining control, also in the southeastern regions of Orlov and Zakhradivka.
In particular, a video posted on social media seems to show that Ukrainian troops have recaptured territory from Russian forces near the city of Chernihiv. Ukrainian soldiers are seen in a video shot in the village of Sloboda, about 19 kilometers from Chernihiv.
