The Lebanese government has begun a meeting today to discuss the state’s monopoly by the state, which says it wants to impose, under Washington’s pressure seeking a timetable for the disarmament of the pro -Hezbollah.
The Shiite movement came out very weakened last fall after two months of open war with Israel, thereby losing its influence on the Lebanese political scene, where it has prevailed for years.
The agenda of the meeting, chaired by the head of the state, Joseph Aun, at the Presidential Palace, specifically includes “the confirmation of state sovereignty throughout its territory by its own means exclusively” and “the examination of the relevant provisions with the ceasefire” which put it in the 27th of the 27th.
The disarmament of Hezbollah-Month Organization that maintained its arsenal after the Civil War (1975-1990)-is a thorny issue in Lebanon.
The leader of Hezbollah said today that his party would not accept a necessary timetable for the delivery of his weapons as long as Israel continues his attacks on Lebanon, as the government is meeting on the issue of the state’s monopoly.
“No timetable that is supposed to be implemented under the Israeli aggression can be accepted,” Naim Kassem said in a television profession. He called on the state to “edit plans to cope with pressure” and not “deprive the resistance (Hezbollah) of its abilities and its power”.
A Lebanese official involved in the talks said earlier at the French Agency, asking not to be named that “Washington is putting pressure on Hezbollah to deliver its weapons, based on an exact timetable”.
According to the same source, “Hezbollah will not hand over its weapons without consideration, which Americans know very well.”
US envoy Tom Barack had called on the Lebanese government in late July to “immediately” implement its commitments to secure the state “the monopoly of arms”.
Aun reiterated a few days ago the country’s determination to disarm all armed groups, including Hezbollah.
Hezbollah sets several terms before examining any discussion of what it considers a “internal affair”, the handling of which should be done in the context of a national defense strategy.
According to Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television network, the US claim is equivalent to “a full surrender of Lebanon to the Israeli enemy”. The party mainly calls for Israel’s departure from five positions it maintains in the South Lebanon after the last war, the cessation of Israeli bumps that are targeting it, and continuing, the liberation of Lebanese prisoners and the start of reconstruction.
Before the last clash of Hezbollah with Israel, which broke out with the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the Shiite movement was all -powerful in Lebanon.
The November 27 agreement provides for Hezbollah’s departure from the border area with Israel, where only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces must develop without Israeli presence.
