Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had telephone conversations on Saturday with his Turkish and Hungarian counterparts, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced in the wake of the summit of the US and Russia presidents, which did not reach any agreement.
President Donald Trump, who hosted President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday for bilateral talks aimed at ending the war, urged Kiev to conclude an agreement with Moscow, saying: “Russia is a great power.”
The telephone communication between Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan took place on Turkey’s initiative, the Russian Foreign Minister said. “Foreign ministers have exchanged views on the results of the meeting at a higher level of Russia-USA held in Alaska on August 15,” Russian diplomacy announced a brief announcement.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Turkey has maintained open diplomatic channels with both warring sides, attempting to put itself a partner of both Russia and Ukraine, and a possible mediator.
Lavrov also had a telephone contact with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Sigado, on discussing the results of the Alaska Summit. Sigiarto said that Hungary hoped for a peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine.
“A viable resolution of the conflict is in our interest, as well as the return of peace and security to Central Europe,” Hungarian Foreign Minister said in a Facebook post about his telephone communication with his Russian counterpart.
Budapest maintains close ties with Russia throughout the war, often opposed to EU sanctions and continued energy cooperation with Moscow, causing a criticism of Western allies of Kiev.
“People are a safer place than it was yesterday,” after the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban said yesterday.
Other European leaders reiterated their public announcement that “it is up to Ukraine to decide on its territory”.
