In view of tomorrow’s Pan -European Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, the Executive Vice -President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Mr. Hena Virkounen and the Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection:

“86 years ago, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbedrop Pact, a blood alliance between two of the most brutal regimes in history, leaving a deep trauma in Europe. The oppression of these totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, as well as the suffering of countless victims, remain live memories for many European citizens.

On August 23, we honor their story. We are celebrating the unmistakable pursuit of freedom and democracy by Europeans throughout history, who have reacted to tyranny, demanded justice and struggled for a fairer, equal and free Europe. We owe them and those who fought that, for the first time in history, in every country in the European Union there is now a generation that has grown up without the shadow of tyranny.

However, this struggle is not a distant memory. The seeds of hatred, intolerance and oppression can still be rooted and our opponents are willing to exploit this fact. Freedom, democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights are principles that have been won in a hard struggle, but can be corroded if they are not adhered to and are not properly protected. The European Union will always stand by those who cultivate the ground for the prevalence of human dignity, justice and equality. Conservation of these values is our collective responsibility. “
