US President Donald Trump said yesterday that it would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank, rejecting relevant calls of far -right Israeli ministers.
Trump referred to this issue in the wake of a telephone communication he said he had with the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss ways to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
“I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. No, I won’t allow it. Is not going to happen, ‘ Trump told reporters at the White House Oval Office.
Netanyahu is under pressure from far -right partners to the government to annex the West Bank, causing concern to Arab state leaders, some of whom had contact with Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“I do not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. Much has been done. It’s time to stop ”, said the US president.
Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 war. The Palestinians consider it an integral part of a future state, along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
About 700,000 Israeli settlers live among 2.7 million Palestinians on the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which has been attached to Israel but has not been recognized by most countries.
Israel refuses to grant control of the West Bank citing security reasons, especially after an unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Trump ‘understands very well’
Trump met on Tuesday with leaders and officials from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan to discuss the almost two -year war in Gaza between Israel and Palestinian. The meeting was held at the UN on the sidelines of the Annual General Assembly.
“Arab and Muslim countries have made the president very clear to the President the risk of attaching any kind to the West Bank and the danger it poses, not only for the possibilities of peace in Gaza, but also for any sustainable peace”said Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faijal bin Farhan al-Saudto journalists in the United Nations on Thursday.
“And I am sure that President Trump understood the position of Arab and Muslim countries and I think he understands very well the dangers and dangers of attaching to the West Bank.”he added.
On the other hand, the Israeli Minister of National Security, Ithamar Ben-Gvirhe said he would propose to the Cabinet to implement his sovereignty to the Israeli West Bank, an action representing de facto annexation of land seized in the Arab -Israeli war of 1967.
Trump will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Monday.
