Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich informed Benjamin Netanyahu about his party’s “red lines” in the face of the prime minister’s forthcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump, in which the two men are expected to talk about the two men.
The far -right minister sets six conditions under which his party will support the agreement aimed at ending the war, creating a post -war governing mechanism, and liberating the 48 hostages held by Hamas, 20 of which are estimated to be alive.
In a statement, Smotrich states that the red lines of his party, “include ending the war only by the complete and real dissolution and demilitarization of the Hamas and Gaza Strip.”
The Israeli forces must remain on the perimeter of the strip along the Gaza-Egypt border, and have complete freedom of action throughout coastal territory, Smotrich says.
In addition, it requires that there is no role for the Palestinian Authority in the rule of the strip, not even indirectly, saying that such a role would be equivalent to recognizing a Palestinian state.
It also requires the agreement not to contain “even a hint” for a Palestinian state. “The idea of a Palestinian state must be completely removed from the negotiating table.”
Smotrich also demands that Qatar has absolutely no involvement in the post -war governance of Gaza, calling the Gulf state “two -year -olds who finance terrorism”.
Finally, Smotrich demands that the borders open with Egypt to allow the Palestinians who want to leave Gaza to go to any country they accept.
“Gaza will no longer be a prison where people are detained illegally and unethically by force just to harm the state of Israel,” he said.
Smotrich also referred to the issue of the West Bank’s annexation by Israel, one of the main claims of his party.
Referring to the West Bank with its biblical names, Smotrich notes that he expects Netanyahu to “politically and practically establish the fact that Judea and Samaria are an integral part of the sovereign state of Israel and to present an alternative plan to manage its life”.
Trump’s plan sketches a possible path to a future Palestinian state, something that Netanyahu categorically and repeatedly rejected, stating Friday at the UN that such a move would be “absolute madness”. He has also systematically rejected the idea that the Palestinian Authority will have any role in Gaza’s post -war governance, while Trump sees the possibility of a reformed Palestinian authority to help in the lane governance.
The governments of the two leaders do not even agree on the idea of attaching parts of the West Bank by Israel. Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday: “I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. I will not allow it. It won’t happen. “
