The parliament of the Bosnian Serb Republic appointed Ana Trisic Babic acting president on Saturday, thus sealing the removal of Milorad Dodikwho was sentenced on February 26 to one year in prison and banned from holding public office for six years.
Trisic Babic, an ally of Dodik, will temporarily hold office until holding new presidential elections in the Bosnian Serb Republic on 23 November.
Parliament also canceled many of them secessionist laws which were voted in the last months after o Dodik was accused of not respecting the decisions of the High Commissioner – whose responsibility is to observe it peace agreement of Dayton – and the Constitutional Court.
Milorad Dodik, a pro-Russian nationalist who wants Republika Srpska to break away and unite with Serbia, had refused to resign and appealed the conviction.
They have against him sanctioned by the US and Britain for obstacles to the implementation of the terms of the Dayton peace agreement that ended the Bosnian war (1992-1995), as well as from other European countries that consider his separatist policy to endanger peace and stability in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
After the end of the war, Bosnia and Herzegovina is divided into two autonomous entities, the Republic of Serbia (Republika Srpska) and the Croatian Muslim Federation which are connected to each other through the central government. Over the years, the powers of the central government have been strengthened, at the expense of the entities and often under pressure from the West.
