Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy passed the entrance of La Santé prison in Paris today, Tuesday.

Shortly before starting to serve his five-year prison sentence, Sarkozy made a post on X pointing out, among other things, that “An innocent man is imprisoned.”

His post in detail:

“As I prepare to cross the walls of the Santé prison, my thoughts are with all French men and women of all conditions and opinions.

I want to tell them, with my unwavering power, that it is not a former President of the Republic who is imprisoned this morning, he is an innocent man.

I will continue to denounce this judicial scandal, this cross of martyrdom that I have carried for more than 10 years. So here is a case of illegal funding without any funding! A lengthy judicial investigation launched on the basis of a document which has now been proven to be a forgery.

I ask no favors, no favors. I am not for you to feel sorry for me, because my voice is heard. I must not be sorry, for my wife and children are by my side, and my friends are innumerable.

But this morning, I feel deep sorrow for France, which is humiliated by the expression of a vengeance that has reached an unprecedented level of hatred. I have no doubt. The truth will triumph. But that the price we had to pay would be overwhelming”
