The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that US energy sanctions against Russia were extremely counterproductive in terms of finding peace in Ukraine.
Russian objectives in Ukraine remain unchanged and the root causes of the conflict must be resolved, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Maria Zakharova, to journalists in Moscow.
He also pointed out that the European Union’s sanctions against Russia have primarily worked against the union itself, adding that EU elites simply cannot accept that their sanctions are not working.
“The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ready to continue contacts with the State Department,” he pointed out, however warned that if the US follows the example of previous US administrations, then it will be a failure.
On Russian assets Zakharova warned that any EU action to seize Russian assets in Euroclear accounts would lead to a “painful response” from Russia.
The EU has no legal means to seize Russian assets, so confiscating them would constitute “theft”, he stressed.
