The Lebanese Council of Ministers approved yesterday the demarcation of the maritime border between Lebanon and Cyprus. The matter is now expected to be submitted to Parliament for ratification.
According to a post by “Observe Lebanon”, this move could bring about significant developments in regional energy exploration and cooperation.
“As Lebanon faces its own economic challenges, consolidating its maritime borders can to strengthen its bargaining position in potential resource extraction”is reported.

It is recalled that the demarcation agreement was pending since 2007 and defined the maritime EEZ by a “median line” which defined six points, but ambiguities remainedespecially around the points 1 and 6 and the matter was temporarily set aside “on hold” until the demarcations with neighboring countries (Syria, Israel) are completed.
