by

His boss World Health Organization for Europe said today that the agency is preparing for possible “chemical attacks” in Ukraine.

“Given the uncertainties of the current situation, there are no assurances that the war will not get worse.”he stated Hans Klüge, WHO Regional Director for Europein a statement sent to journalists from Lviv, Ukraine.

“The WHO is examining all the scenarios and drawing up contingency plans for different situations that could affect the people of Ukraine, from the ongoing response to mass casualties to chemical attacks.”he said, without giving further details.

Western officials have repeatedly expressed fears that Russia may use chemical and biological agents in Ukraine, with the risk of repercussions beyond the country.

The Russian Defense Ministry has accused Kyiv, without providing any evidence, of planning a chemical attack against its own citizens in order to accuse Moscow of using chemical weapons in the invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24.

In the same speech, which was delayed because the sirens sounded for a possible air strike in Lviv, Kluge said the WHO was co-ordinating with the European Union to screen patients arriving from Ukraine and regulate their transport for treatment within Europe.

He himself stated that WHERE had already distributed over 185 tons of medical suppliesincluding wound treatment materials, throughout Ukraine and that an additional 125 tonnes are in the process of being shipped.

According to a WHO database, more than 91 attacks on Ukrainian health infrastructure have killed 73 people since the invasion beganwithout specifying who is responsible for them.
