London, Thanasis Gavos
Up to eight new nuclear reactors are included in the new energy strategy presented by the British government, in the aftermath of rising energy prices worldwide and its Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The new strategy, which aims to strengthen the UK’s energy independence and contain prices, also includes increasing wind and solar energy production as well as hydrogen energy.
According to the government plan, by 2030 up to 95% of the electricity consumed by the country will be produced from low-emission sources.
The sub-objectives include the production of 50 gigawatts of energy from offshore wind farms.
In the short term, however, the government announced that it intends to move on new round of licenses for the exploitation of hydrocarbons from the North Sea, noting that domestic fuel extraction causes less environmental burden than imports from abroad.
The new strategy has been widely criticized by environmentalists and experts, not only because of new drilling in the North Sea, but also because it does not include energy-saving measures through better building insulation.
THE Minister of Energy Kwasi Quarteng admitted that the strategy includes only short-term and medium-term measures, while the Prime Minister Boris Johnson He said the new strategy “corrects the mistakes of the past” with an emphasis on the country’s energy security, without “blackmail” by people like Vladimir Putin.
