A new plan to combat so-called “ghost weapons”, ie those that do not have a serial number, was revealed by the American president, in an effort to
tackle crime in his country.
Speaking at an event in the White House at the White House, Tzo Biden said “these are weapons used by criminals” and that he intends to do everything in his power to deprive them of this option.
The plan stipulates that it will be illegal to both manufacture weapons assembly kits without serial numbers and sell them from authorized stores without a history check. It is, of course, expected to provoke reactions from pro-US gun owners.
The plan is part of a package announced by Biden and the Justice Department last April to address the growing incidence of armed violence in the United States and to curb massive armed attacks.
In 2021, the Office of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) reported that about 20,000 “ghost weapons” were recovered by police during crime investigations – a number ten times higher than in 2016, according to White House statistics. House.
The Justice Department plan bans weapons assembly kits without serial numbers, which citizens can buy online or in stores without a history check and then assemble at home within 30 minutes.
Gun deaths increased in 2021 compared to the previous year, according to data from the NGO Gun Violence Archive. In particular, 20,726 deaths were reported in the United States, not including suicides. Among them were 693 massive armed attacks (this term refers to attacks with 4 or more victims), of which 702 people were killed and more than 2,800 were injured, according to the data of this NGO.
President Biden has also nominated Steve Deltelbach, a former Ohio attorney general, to head the ATF.
