London, Thanasis Gavos
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie Simonds and the Minister of Finance Risi Sunak have received a notification from the Metropolitan Police that they will be fined for the partygate.
The London police investigation focuses on 12 parties that took place during a lockdown on Downing Street and other government buildings.
Mr Johnson becomes the first incumbent British Prime Minister to face a fine for violating the law.
The leader of the main opposition Labor Party, Sir Kir Starmer, called for the resignation of both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance, stressing that “they have repeatedly broken the law and have repeatedly lied to the British people”.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davy has called for an emergency recall of the House of Commons from the Easter holidays to hold a vote of confidence in the prime minister. The resignations of Messrs. Johnson & Sunak was also demanded by Nicholas Sterzion of the Scottish National Party.
The Ministerial Code in Britain stipulates that any member of the government “knowingly” misleading parliament must resign.
Mr Johnson had repeatedly dismissed allegations of lockdown violations from the House of Commons, citing assurances from government officials.
Relatives of the Covid victims said in a statement that if the heads of government had a little dignity “they would be gone by tonight”.
Earlier it was reported that the Metropolitan Police has decided that more than 50 fines should be imposed for the partygate.
