A Ukrainian lawmaker who met with Pope Francis this weekend said the pope was overwhelmed with emotion when reference was made to children who died during the Russian invasion.
Maria Mezendseva, who is in Rome as a member of the Ukrainian delegation, told CNN that she had personally informed the Pope “about the number of victims among children.”
“Started to cry“It just touched him so much,” the MP said characteristically.
Mezedseva also said the delegation had received a “positive message” about the possibility of Pope Francis visiting Ukraine.
At least 205 children have been killed since the start of the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian prosecutor said on Monday, while more than 362 children have been injured.
Pope Francis said on Sunday that the world was marking an “Easter of war” and called for peace in Ukraine, which he said had been plunged into a “cruel and irrational war”.
“We have seen a lot of blood, too much violence. “Our hearts are also filled with fear and anxiety,” the pope said during the annual Easter blessing.
Among the 100,000 people who attended the Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Square were several Ukrainian politicians, including Ivan Fedorov, the elected mayor of the occupied Ukrainian city of Melitopol, who was arrested by Russian forces last month on charges of acts.
