Born in Buenos Aires, Rosson grew up in a community of solidarity where rich and poor neighbors cared for each other. As a child she had many experiences of kindness, justice and equality and she was determined to leave her mark on history.
After graduating from medical school in 1982, at a time when women were non-existent in this field, Dr. Rosson studied reproductive issues but from a female perspective. Her work has helped to reduce the stigma attached to reproductive health issues.
In 1910 she joined forces with prominent suffragettes from all over the world, as she participated in the First International Women’s Conference in Buenos Aires. It laid the foundations for women’s rights movements not only in Argentina but throughout Latin America. In 1919, Dr. Rosson became one of the founding members of the Women’s Rights Association, which encouraged women to claim equal pay and the right to vote.
The Union’s efforts did not lead to any rapid political change as their goals were considered radical at the time. Nevertheless, it aroused the interest of major political formations and laid the foundations for later feminist movements.
During her career, Dr. Rosson was particularly concerned with children’s health and well-being. She worked as a medical inspector in the National Department of Hygiene and later in the National Council of Education.
Her work has helped children and women in Argentina have more opportunities. The 115th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Elvira Rosson reminds us that women can and will achieve everything.
