Poland: 4 dead, 7 missing and 20 injured after mine explosion

Four people were killed, about 20 were injured and seven are missing following explosion in a coal mine today in southern Polandaccording to the company to which the mine belongs and the authorities.

According to JSW, a first explosion occurred shortly after midnight at a depth of 1,000 meters at the mine in Pniovek in Pavlovice. Forty-two miners were at the scene of the explosion and most of them suffered burns.

A second explosion occurred shortly afterwards during the rescue operation and hit members of the rescue squad.

Polish Prime Minister Matthew Morawiecki expressed his condolences to the families of the miners and announced that he would go to the spot.

Poland, which continues to depend on carbon for about 70% of the energy neededhas experienced other mining accidents in recent years.

In March 2021, two miners were killed and two others injured in an accident at the Mislovice-Wesola mine in southern Poland, while in 2018 five people were killed at the Zofiovka mine owned by JSW.

In 2021 almost 80,000 people were employed in the mining sector in Poland.
