One video that went viral and shows the impact of confinement in Shanghai to its inhabitants was erased from the Chinese internet by censors now causing confusion and anger among internet users.
Its financial capital Of Chinawith a population of 25 million, is facing its worst Covid-19 outbreak since the pandemic began.
The Ministry of Health announced today 12 new deaths and more than 23,000 new coronavirus cases in Shanghai.
Those who ended up were on average 88 years old, according to the Shanghai government. They all had underlying diseases and none of them were vaccinated.
Local authorities attribute this new increase in cases mainly to overpopulation in some old apartment buildings, where kitchens and toilets are shared.
Almost all Shanghai residents have been isolated since early April. Many find it difficult to get fresh produce and see a doctor.
The six-minute video with the title “The Voice of April” is a montage of residents’ voices recorded during the lockdown with aerial shots.
In it, residents are heard complaining about the shortages of food and medicine, but also about their harsh treatment by the authorities.
The creator of the video has added to these black and white images, in chronological order, a series of sounds from press conferences, videos posted on social media or phone calls from residents.
The video begins with the voices of politicians declaring, at the beginning of the epidemic in March, that a brief precautionary lockdown would not be appropriate due to its financial implications.
This initial hesitation led to the explosion of the number of positive cases that finally triggered today’s lockdown, which is expected to last for several weeks.
The video was shared en masse on Friday night on the social networking site WeChat. But the censors managed to erase every trace of him within a few hours.
All references to this were also deleted from the Weibo microblog, but some comments criticizing the censorship remained.
