The vote on US President Joe Biden’s $1.75 trillion social package was postponed after House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy delivered a devious speech that lasted more than 4 hours.
The vote was originally scheduled for Thursday night after the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan arbitrator, released an assessment of the project’s cost, in line with ward demands from Democratic representatives.
But the vote was pushed back to Friday morning (19), due to a speech by McCarthy, who used a thick folder of comments prepared in advance to support his intervention for more than four hours, sometimes shouting about House Democrats, who they openly criticized their obstruction.
“I’m fed up. America is fed up,” McCarthy said in his speech, which cataloged a list of Republican grievances, some related to the bill and some not.
McCarthy was occasionally stopped by Democrats, who were trying to push Biden’s $1.75 trillion domestic investment bill forward.
Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez described it in a video posted on social media as “one of the worst and lowest quality speeches” she has ever seen.
