Ukraine: IAEA Concerned Over Lack of Access to Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant

by

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who has returned from Ukraine, has expressed concern about the Russian-controlled nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, which the UN service could not access after the invasion.

“The state of the nuclear facilities in Ukraine is at the top of my list of concerns,” Rafael Grossi told a news conference at the agency’s headquarters in Vienna.

“The facilities” remain under Russian control, the Ukrainian regulator has no control, but we must carry out a series of tasks as soon as possible, both in terms of inspection, surveillance and security activities, “he said.

“We have to return to Zaporizhia, it is extremely important”, insisted the head of IAEA.

In that sense, it is possible Grosy had contacts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during his visit.

“Our consultations are continuing, primarily with Ukraine but also with Russia,” he said, announcing a meeting with Russian officials “in a few days.”

Asked about reports by Ukrainian authorities about rockets fired over the facility earlier this week, Grossi said he had “received a video”. “We are in the process of verifying, but if such a development were confirmed, it would be very serious.”
