Holocaust Memory in … TikTok

by

At the age of 87, o Giddon Lev talked about his life through TikTok. Lev survived the Holocaust. In the living room of their house, Julie’s partner helps him in production of video clips climbing on the platform. He says his message seems to resonate to many of his young followers.

“I think that despite so much horror, so much suffering, so much pain, so much cruelty, there are also good things in life and good people (….) You young people can make the world a better place.” says.

Gidon Lev was born into a Jewish family in 1935 in Carlsbad, a spa town now called Karlovy Vary and is located at Czech republic. “This is the last photo of me and my parents before they sent us to the Teresenstadt concentration camp,” he said.

Hard memories

The persecution of the Jews had started much earlier. “They wanted to isolate the Jewish people from the rest of the population, to no longer feel like people,” said the 87-year-old. “We had to stand in line for lunch, an immune soup with a bad taste, sometimes with a small piece of meat. And in the evening also soup. We also got a loaf of bread for two people for three days “.

Tens of thousands of others were displaced to extermination camps in Eastern Europe. One of them was his father. “This is the pendant my father threw at my mother from a small window on the train to Auschwitz.”

The hope for future generations

His father never returned. Still, Lev says that he is optimistic and he does not like to be defined exclusively by the Holocaust. However, he believes that it is necessary to address the anti-Semitismthe Holocaust deniers and racism. His comment:

“Sometimes I think about the way the Germans were cruel and so inhuman to other people. “I can only hope that there are many young people who know what is right, what is good and are struggling to make it better.”

Future generations must be able to recognize the worrying signs. Only then can they ensure that this will never happen again.
