“Ukraine needs all the help it can get and, at the same time, we need all the resources we can raise to give Ukraine the help it needs,” Sumer told reporters in New York.
Last Thursday, US President Biden called on Congress to approve a $ 33 billion aid package to Kyiv. This is a dramatic increase in US funding to Ukraine, more than two months after Russia invaded the country.
His government has also asked Congress to include in the package provisions that would allow it to seize more funds, liquidate them and send revenue to Ukraine.
According to Mr. Sumer, the provisions that will be added will speed up the seizure of property of Russian oligarchs in the US, as well as legal proceedings, as requested by the White House.
They will also make it a criminal offense to seize funds obtained through “corrupt deals” with the Russian government, he added.
“It’s time for the Russian oligarchs, to whom we are imposing sanctions, to be held accountable for the wealth they have illegally acquired,” Sumer said.
The House of Representatives has already sent a signal of support for Joe Biden’s government’s plan to target Russian oligarchs who benefit from their relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin by approving a non-binding resolution last Wednesday.
The $ 33 billion package, which members of Congress say they want approved as soon as possible, includes $ 20 billion in weapons, ammunition and other military aid. The rest of the budget includes financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
